>> there is a threat of more snow. yes, first at 5:00, omg, people! omg! we have more winter weather coming, and yes, it feels like spring, but we are not done yet. >> and believe it or not, parts of the region are under a winter weather advisory. this is the first look of the snowstorm from chopper 4 with the entire area blanketed in heavy snow. while most of the roads are clear, they are going to be coated again. >> our meteorologist doug kammerer who has not slept for five days now, and what is next? give it to us gently. >> well, gently, and that is the good thing here, mother nature is going to give it to us e gently tonight. this is not a big storm, but we will see the snow as we move into the overnight hours and into saturday. looking at the storm team 4 radar, and it is not anything, but calm tonight after what has been a beautiful day. and the temperatures into the low 50s and the mid-50s in some location and all of the white

out there is making for some nice activity and across the region, on the radar, this is the next storm system that is bringing the system to the cincinnati area and ohio and rain to the south. this may start as rain in the area and then transition as the colder air moves in. and you mentioned the winter weath weather advisory, it is for most of northern virginia and to the west. it is the i-81 corridor and hagerstown are and winchester, and we will be getting the accumulating snow. everybody has a chance for it. i will show you what to expect in your area coming up. >> and now some breaking news as a child is shot in the district. an 8-year-old girl was shot today on valley avenue in southeast. near 13th street. darcy spencer is live at the scene. darcy? >> well, just a heartbreaking story here in southeast

washington today. we wrapped up a press briefing with d.c. police, and they are confirming that the little girl is 8 years old, and lives right here in the neighborhood. she was shot and wounded just after 3:00 this afternoon, and police say that right now she is in surgery clinging to life. let me tell you what her grandmother told me a few moments ago. she says that little girl was walking from this building here to her aunt's house from this building here to her mother's house this afternoon just after 3:00 when the shots rang out. the d.c. police at the briefing said that when the shooting happened, there was a group of people running from the scene. now, this is a gated community here there. is a gate that you have to go through to get through, as well as the fencing here, so it is not an easy place to get into and out of unless you in fact live here or are let in. d.c. police saying that at this point they have no lookout information, and no suspect ss d no description to give out, and they are asking for help from

the community. if anybody has any idea who may have been involved in the shooting, they are asked to call d.c. police to give them that tip. and today, again, an 8-year-old girl clinging to life in surgery after being shot in the body. >> they called asking us if we would share their story. tonight, we are hearing from the family of a snowplow driver killed in a snowstorm. a vdot dump struck hit him wn snow blanketed our area, and this morning, bureau reporter david culver met with the family >> reporter: you can feel her grief and pain. my son, she says, my treasure. she misses her son.

he was never a bad child. he always helped me with everything. he was on the job early and among the thou samd sands to pl streets and he got out to check his spread er, and the vdot dum truck hit him. it breaks my heart there working and there he died. >> i called my sister an she said that my nephew is in the hospital, and he died already. >> reporter: only seven months apart from his nephew. >> more like a brother. >> reporter: he reached out and said it is his second year plowing, and he enjoyed it, but the family had concerns. >> i worried him doing this job because of the danger. >> reporter: he was a contractor with vdot and i talked to the head quarters and they called his loss devastating. they say it is a reminder of the dangers of the job, and they say

clear. >> that's it. it is a rare kind of winter thunderstorm that happens during intense snowstorms like the ones we have had this week, and sometimes there is even lightning. well, that is a sound of progress, some leesburg residents say that the plows did with wa what they are supposed to and now it is their turn. they got out early to try to dig out, and try to get back to normal, but unfortunately, some found they had flat tires under all of t others plan to put off the cleanup hoping that the sun would do the job for them. >> and in montgomery county, in gaithersburg, they lifted the snow emergency this morning, and like so many other communities the digging out is going to continue through the weekend and especially on the messy side streets. there is a message on the emergency website saying to clear the sidewalks to make it easier for the pedestrians with with the children heading back to school next week.

absolutely. thanks, jack. >> and now to a sign of the times back home. drivers along route 7 and falls church are being schooled in how cold it is. too cold to change the marquee at george mason high school, home of the mustangs. and hopefully they get out there soon. >> and 50 degrees you can't change the sign? >> well, come on. >> it was like a day to, i had the sunroof open in my car. >> well, it was absolutely beautiful, and i heard you talk thing and it earlier like the white snow down, and the blue skies and the sun is shining and 52 degrees. >> picturesque. >> not much bert than that, but it is going to be better after tomorrow, because then we have snow coming in, but then it is going to be a lot better. a beautiful shot down there towards the national harbor and looking at the potomac and the beautiful skies and not bad at all, and we have snow on the way, and this is what we saw today, and that is nothing but sunshine across the area, and that sun did help to warm us

into the 50s across the region and some locations into the mid-50s, and outside at the airport, we are currently sitting down into the number of the 52-range, and now back to 50 with the winds out of the north at 5 miles per hour, so they are on the calm side. nice evening. storm team 4 ri dar adar is in region, and it is going to to be moving to our south, and that is the best chance to get the snow out of the clippers. with the temperatures near 50, anything that develops, you can see it starting off as the rain before the cold air is able to work in. and a winter weather advisory in effect overnight does not include d.c. or annapolis or anybody around the west. and it is in petersburg and martinsburg and fredrick and the potential is there for accumulated snowfall and more inches out there, and right now on the mild side and as we move through the night tonight, we will see the snow moving in.

and winchester, and fredrick and that is with some rain down to the virginia and the district, and then down to fredericksburg be and kwaunt eco at 7:00 p.m., and the rest of you getting snow? leesburg and gaithersburg and at 10:00, that is what we are dealing with. i-95 west, better chance for snow as is normally the case, but at 1:00 is when we will see it moving through the d.c. metro area. who is doing to get what? a coat to an inch down to the south. and that includes d.c., a coating. 1 to 2 inches around fredrick and leesburg and warrenton, and two inches to the west, and some location locations at martinsburg and hagerstown that you could get upwards to four or five inches of snow out of the storm. we will watch it carefully, because these storms are sneaky, and we will watch it, too. we will give you the update at 6:00 and again at 11:00. tomorrow, the snow moves in, and

it is a valentine's day that many e same sex couples in virginia say they will remember. last night the supreme court judge ruled that the ban on same-sex marriages are unconstitutional. >> and that means that the marriages cannot happen yet though. and our bureau chief julie kcary has the latest. >> together as a couple, they did together what they have not tried before, entering the fairfax county courthouse and asked for a marriage license. this is a demonstration planned before the ruling, and other members came to support them.

and they returned with a letter saying that same sex marriages are prohibited. and virginia's ban is unconn tuunconnst unconnstitutional is going to happen. >> and there is no doubt in my mind that it will happen, and virginia has to change with the times. >> reporter: and in virginia mark herring outraged the republicans last month when he declared that he was going to join the same sex couples who challenge the ban and no longer support the amendment to ban the amendment in 2006. and like the ruling, it deprived people of equal rights. >> in is about our friends and
